Saya Agnes Purwidyantri, biasa dipanggil Agnes. Saya berasal dari Indonesia dan bergabung dengan INL pada bulan Mei 2019 sebagai peneliti paska doktoral untuk mengerjakan pengembangan sensor pengujian bahan pangan, di bawah kelompok riset Food Quality and Safety. Penelitian saya terkait dengan pengembangan graphene sensor berbasis field-effect transistor dan microfluidic untuk deteksi DNA, dimana dalam projek ini digunakan untuk mendeteksi keaslian minuman Anggur (Wine) sebagai salah satu produk komoditas terpenting di Portugal. Sebelumnya Saya bekerja di Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) sebagai peneliti dan memiliki pengalaman paska doktoral di Universitas Chang Gung, Taiwan untuk pengembangan sensor biomedis. Saya menerima gelar doktoral di bidang Teknik Biomedis dari Universitas Chang Gung, Taiwan, pada tahun 2017 dan gelar Master di bidang Bioteknologi pada tahun 2013 dari Asia University, Taiwan. Sedangkan gelar Sarjana Teknologi Pangan, Saya peroleh pada tahun 2007 dari Universitas Katolik Soegijapranata, Semarang. Indonesia.
Pertanyaan 1: Apa warna favorit anda dan bagaimana anda mengasosiasikannya dengan ilmu pengetahuan?
Warna favorit saya adalah merah. Merah adalah warna yang kuat yang memiliki interpretasi multi-perspektif dalam sains. Dalam optik, merah adalah warna yang berada di ujung spektrum cahaya tampak. Merah juga merupakan komponen warna terpenting dalam RGB model yang sering kita temui di piranti layar elektronik. Dalam biologi, merah adalah warna darah, zat terpenting dalam kehidupan. Dalam ilmu pengetahuan sejarah dan budaya, terutama bagi orang Indonesia, merah dikenal sebagai simbol keberanian dan pengorbanan. Dalam budaya Cina, merah mencerminkan kegembiraan dan keberuntungan. Sementara itu, orang-orang modern dan banyak kalangan di Amerika dan Eropa mengasosiasikan warna merah dengan gairah, panas, dan cinta. Sebagai seorang ilmuwan, saya melihat merah sebagai simbol keberanian, dedikasi dan komitmen serta lambang cinta terhadap sains itu sendiri untuk terciptanya suatu solusi terhadap masalah menuju kesejahteraan masyarakat.
Pertanyaan 2: Siapakah peneliti favorit anda?
Sebagian besar dari penelitian saya berkaitan dengan biosensor untuk deteksi DNA. Kita semua tahu bahwa DNA adalah komponen terpenting dalam terciptanya kehidupan karena DNA diketahui sebagai komponen pembawa materi genetik yang diturunkan dari generasi ke generasi. Ilmuwan favorit saya adalah Barbara McClintok, seorang perempuan peneliti dari Amerika Serikat yang memenangkan penghargaan Nobel dalam bidang Fisiologi dan Kedokteran pada tahun 1983. Beliau menemukan fenomena perpindahan suatu segmen DNA menuju lokasi genom lain pada tanaman jagung. Bagian DNA ini kemudian diketahui sebagai segmen transposable. Yang benar-benar mengesankan bagi saya adalah kegigihan dan ketahanan beliau dalam mempertahankan hasil penemuan yang pada saat itu yakni sekitar tahun 1950an, merupakan hal yang mustahil, karena para ahli genetik pada masa tersebut meyakini bahwa DNA hanya dapat berpindah melalui proses mutasi. Sampai akhirnya, ada peneliti lain yang menemukan fenomena yang sama pada bakteri, dan akhirnya penemuan Barbara McClintok pun diakui dan hingga kini menjadi salah satu kontributor terbesar dalam ilmu kedokteran. Hal ini merupakan pengingat yang baik bahwa pengetahuan dan penelitian adalah pekerjaan panjang yang membutuhkan ketekunan dan keuletan. Salah satu kutipan indah Barbara McClintok yang benar-benar menjadi cambuk bagi saya yang harus menghadapi banyak tantangan sebagai seorang perempuan peneliti yang juga berasal dari negara berkembang adalah, “Jika Anda tahu Anda berada di jalur yang benar, dan jika Anda memiliki pengetahuan yang mendalam, maka tidak ada seorangpun yang dapat menghentikan Anda, tidak peduli apa yang orang lain katakan.
Pertanyaan 3: Apakah penemuan favorit anda sepanjang sejarah dan kenapa?
Penemuan favorit saya sepanjang masa adalah Internet. Saya selalu bertanya-tanya, bagaimana ya kira-kira dunia ini tanpa internet? Terlahir sebagai generasi Y, Saya merasa beruntung menyaksikan pergeseran kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi, terutama di dalam bidang informasi dan komunikasi yang dapat diakses dengan mudah dan cepat. Internet adalah contoh dari hasil penelitian yang tidak diciptakan oleh hanya seorang penemu tunggal. Penelitian tentang internet telah dimulai sejak lama dan internet tercipta sebagai hasil dari pengumpulan data hasil riset dari banyak ilmuwan. Hal ini seakan menjadi kontradiksi dalam paradigma penelitian dimana pelaku riset cenderung melindungi hasil penelitiannya dan tidak mudah membagikannya kepada peneliti lain. Internet adalah penemuan luar biasa yang menunjukkan kepada kita pentingnya kolaborasi dan open-science untuk perkembangan iptek pada khususnya dan peradaban manusia pada umumnya.
Pertanyaan 4: Bagaimana cara anda menjelaskan tentang Nanoteknologi dan Nanosains kepada orang awam?
Cara paling sederhana untuk mendefinisikan Nanoteknologi dan Nanosains adalah mendeskripsikannya sebagai studi tentang materi yang sangat-sangat kecil. Pada umumnya, semakin kecil disini akan mengacu pada semakin baiknya hasil, dimana kebaikan ini dapat dijabarkan dalam berbagai perwujudan, misalnya kecepatan, efisiensi, dan lain sebagainya. “Nano” secara harafiah mengacu pada ukuran sekecil satu per 1 milyar dan biasanya tidak terlihat oleh mata telanjang, tetapi dampaknya sungguh luar biasa. Salah satu contoh nyata yang dapat kita rasakan saat ini adalah terkait dengan terjadinya pandemi Covid-19 yang disebabkan oleh Corona virus yang tidak kasat mata, namun telah menghancurkan berbagai sektor kehidupan manusia. Fokus utama dalam bidang Nanoteknologi dan Nanosains umumnya adalah pengembangan senyawa, material atau instrumentasi dengan skala nano untuk meningkatkan efisiensi kerja dari suatu sistem. Yang lebih penting lagi, saat berbicara dengan orang awam tentang kedua bidang ini, saya akan menyampaikan bahwa bidang studi ini sangat menyenangkan dan mengasyikkan untuk dipelajari sehingga akan menimbulkan rangsangan positif dan keingintahuan yang lebih mendalam bagi mereka.
Pertanyaan 5: Apa proyeksi anda tentang perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan sepuluh tahun mendatang dan penemuan besar apa yang mungkin muncul?
Saya membayangkan satu dekade kedepan, otomatisasi dan Artificial Intelligence secara dominan akan mendatangkan banyak inovasi penting yang berguna bagi kehidupan manusia. Sepuluh tahun bukanlah waktu yang terbentang jauh dari saat ini, dan saya memperkirakan bahwa perkembangan iptek pada masa itu akan berpengaruh pada pergeseran gaya hidup masyarakat yang lebih bergantung pada interaksi non-fisik serta teknologi berbasis chip dan robot.
Pertanyaan 6: Menurut anda, apakah alasan utama bagi orang-orang muda untuk menjadi ilmuwan?
Sekali lagi mengutip peneliti favorit saya, Barbara McClintok, “jika Anda memiliki rasa ingin tahu dan penasaran, maka Anda bisa menjadi seorang ilmuwan”. Keingintahuan adalah naluri manusia yang sudah tumbuh sejak usia dini. Jadi, saya melihat bahwa naluri untuk meneliti sebenarnya sudah ada dalam diri kita sejak lahir. Generasi muda adalah generasi yang akan membawa dan meneruskan warisan pengetahuan menuju peradaban yang lebih tinggi kepada generasi berikutnya, dan itu harus dimulai dari sekarang. Saya berpendapat bahwa dorongan untuk menjadi ilmuwan harus digalakkan dikalangan perempuan-perempuan muda dimana pada saat ini, jumlah perempuan peneliti diseluruh dunia, terutama di negara-negara berkembang masih sangat rendah dan kurang terwakili suaranya. Orang muda, terutama anak-anak perempuan, kemudian akan menjadi ibu. Kita semua tahu bahwa ibu adalah pendidik utama dan pertama bagi seorang anak. Ibu-ibu yang memiliki tanggung jawab dan pandangan jangka panjang terhadap perkembangan peradaban manusia akan menjadi panutan terbaik bagi calon-calon ilmuwan dimasa depan. Di masa depan pun, anak-anak ini kemudian akan menjadi orang tua yang akan meneruskan tanggung jawab yang sama kepada generasi berikutnya, dan bila siklus ini dapat diteruskan tanpa akhir, generasi muda bermental peneliti akan terbentuk dengan baik untuk kemajuan dunia. Itulah sebabnya, saya percaya bahwa memelihara semangat generasi muda dalam penelitian merupakan suatu perbuatan mulia sebagai rasa syukur terhadap semesta. Selain itu, anak muda saat ini telah dikaruniai kemudahan-kemudahan yang tidak dimiliki oleh generasi sebelumnya seperti adanya kemajuan teknologi yang dapat mengakselerasi prestasi akademik mereka. Jadi, jika saya ditanya, “Mengapa anak muda harus menjadi ilmuwan? Saya akan akan menjawab dengan pasti, “Kenapa Tidak?”
I am Agnes Purwidyantri, you can call me Agnes. I came from Indonesian and joined the INL in May 2019 as a postdoctoral research fellow to work on the development of an automatic integrated sensor for food and beverages under the research group of Food Quality and Safety. My research is related to the optimization of the performance graphene-based microfluidic field-effect transistor sensor for DNA detection, mainly to check wine authenticity as one of the most important commodities in Portugal. I previously served the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and was a postdoctoral fellow at Biosensor Group, Chang Gung University, Taiwan, and working sensors for biomedical projects. I received my doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering from Chang Gung University, Taiwan, in 2017 and a Master’s degree in Biotechnology, received in 2013 from Asia University, Taiwan. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Food Technology in 2007 from Soegijapranata Catholic University, Indonesia.
1st question: Please tell us about what your favourite colour is. Why is that your favourite colour? Would you associate it with science?
My favourite colour is red. Red is a strong colour with a multi-perspective interpretation in science. In optics, red is the colour at the end of the visible spectrum of light and RGB colour model in the present electronic display application. In biology, red is the colour of blood, the essential substance in life. In history and culture, especially for Indonesian, red is known as the symbol of bravery along with sacrifice. In Chinese culture, it reflects joy and good fortune. Meanwhile, the moderns associate red with passion, heat, and love. As a scientist, I perceive red as the colour of courage and passion in research where persistence and love for science itself will bring out the joy and welfare to the society.
2nd question: Who is your favourite scientist in history?
I work profoundly on the development of DNA-based biosensor and have long grown a huge curiosity on DNA, the most important building-block of life which carries genetic information passed from generation to generation. My favourite scientist is Barbara McClintock, who won a Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1983. She unraveled the ability of DNA in maize to move between locations within the genome and influence the activity of the other genes. This part of DNA is called a transposable segment. What really captivates me is her tenacity and resilience in holding up her finding in front of the sceptical scientific community who, at that time in the 1950s believed that DNA was permanently fixed in order and only changed through discrete mutations. Until finally, other researchers found the same phenomena in bacteria, and her findings were finally acknowledged, and it contributed significantly to medical sciences. One of her beautiful quotes that really inspires me as a woman scientist from a third world country is, “If you know you are on the right track if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off… no matter what they say.”
3rd question: What is your favourite invention in history and why?
My all-time favourite invention is the Internet. I always grow question in my mind of how the world would be without the Internet now. I was fortunate to witness the quest for the advancement of science and technology, especially in the way how the search for information and communication is now shifted to a very rapid fashion. The Internet is an example of an invention without a single inventor. The study had long been conducted, and interestingly, the system was finally built up of the shared data among researchers, such a conduct that is not common for conventional and old-fashioned scientists who tend to keep their data unopened to others. The Internet is an outstanding invention that shows us the importance of collaboration as well as the open science for science in particular, and human civilization in general.
4th question: How would you briefly define the Nanotechnology and Nanoscience terms for laypeople?
The simplest way of defining Nanotechnology and Nanoscience is the study on a tiny thing. The tinier, the better. Better in any terms, such as faster, more efficient, and the like. “Nano” literally refers to as tiny as 109 size of a thing and typically invisible by a naked eye, but the impact is tremendous. One of the most realistic and the most powerful impact we can feel about nanoscale substance is the incidence of the Covid-19 pandemic shattering all the human sectors in life. Nanotechnology and Nanoscience focus on the development of nanoscale compounds or materials for higher actuation efficiency of a system. More importantly, I would surely add to the laypeople that these fields are fun and exciting so, it would be more stimulating for them.
5th question: Please now imagine science and technology in 10 years. In your opinion, what would the big invention of the next decade be?
I would imagine the automation and artificial intelligence to be predominantly seen as the big inventions in the next decades. Ten years are not too far away from now, and I would predict that the shifting will be more to the lifestyle-changing of the society, which plausibly relies more on the non-physical contact interaction, chips, and robotics technology.
6th question: According to you, which are the main reasons for a young person to become a scientist?
Again, quoting my favourite researcher, Barbara McClintock, “if you are curious, you can be a scientist”. The curiosity is an instinct of humans, grown from an early age. Thus, I see that being a scientist is actually in everyone’s blood. The young generations will carry and pass the legacy in building civilization for the next generations, and it has to start now. Also, I would particularly trigger girls as so far, women are still underrepresented in research, especially in developing countries. Young people, especially girls, would then become mothers. As a mother is the most initially influential person in a child’s life, a mother with long-term vision responsibility for human welfare will be the best role model for breeding the “future scientists”. These kids would then become parents who will pass similar responsibilities to the next generation, and it will be carried on and on creating a never-ending positive circle. Hence, I believe that nurturing young generation passion in research is an infinite noble act of thanksgiving to the universe. Additionally, young person nowadays has been gifted with exceptional privileges not owned by the previous generations such as the advancement of technology which would accelerate their scientific performance for the contribution to the society’s welfare. So, if I were asked, “Why young people should become scientists?” I would surely reply, “Why Not?”

A minha investigação está relacionada com a otimização do desempenho de sensores de transístor de efeito de campo de microfluidos à base de grafeno para deteção de DNA, principalmente para verificar a autenticidade do vinho, como sendo um dos produtos mais importantes em Portugal. Trabalhei anteriormente no Instituto de Ciências da Indonésia (LIPI), sendo pós-doutorada no grupo de Biosensores na Universidade Chang Gung, em Taiwan, onde trabalhei em sensores para projetos biomédicos. Em 2017 doutorei-me em Engenharia Biomédica pela Universidade Chang Gung, em Taiwan, e em 2013, tirei mestrado em Biotecnologia, pela Universidade Ásia, em Taiwan. Pergunta 1: Diga-nos qual é a sua cor preferida e porquê. Associaria essa cor à ciência?
A minha cor favorita é o vermelho. O vermelho é uma cor forte com uma interpretação multi-perspetiva na ciência. Em ótica, o vermelho é a cor no final do espectro visível da luz e modelo de cor RGB na presente aplicação de ecrã eletrónico. Em biologia, o vermelho é a cor do sangue, a substância essencial da vida. Na história e cultura, especialmente para a Indonésia, o vermelho é conhecido como o símbolo de bravura, juntamente com o sacrifício. Na cultura chinesa, reflete a alegria e a boa sorte. Enquanto os modernos associam o vermelho à paixão, calor e amor. Como cientista, vejo o vermelho como a cor da coragem e da paixão na investigação, onde a persistência e o amor pela própria ciência irão trazer a alegria e o bem-estar à sociedade.
Pergunta 2: Qual é o seu / a sua cientista preferida de todos os tempos?
Trabalho aprofundadamente o desenvolvimento de biossensores baseados no DNA e há muito tempo que me tem crescido uma enorme curiosidade sobre o DNA, o bloco mais importante de construção da vida que transporta informação genética transmitida de geração em geração. A minha cientista preferida é Barbara McClintock, que ganhou o Prémio Nobel de Fisiologia e Medicina em 1983. Ela desvendou a capacidade do DNA no milho para se movimentar entre locais dentro do genoma e influenciar a atividade dos outros genes. Esta parte do DNA é chamada de segmento transponível. O que realmente me fascina é a sua tenacidade e resiliência em atrasar a sua descoberta diante da comunidade científica cética, que, naquela época (1950), acreditava que o ADN estava fixado em ordem de forma permanente e só mudou através de mutações discretas. Até que, finalmente, outros investigadores encontraram os mesmos fenómenos em bactérias, e as suas descobertas foram finalmente reconhecidas, o que contribuiu significativamente para as ciências médicas. Uma das suas belas citações que realmente me inspira como uma mulher cientista de um país do terceiro mundo é: «Se sabes que estás no caminho certo, se tens esse conhecimento interior, então ninguém te pode impedir, digam o que disserem.»
Pergunta 3: Na sua opinião, qual foi a melhor invenção de sempre e porquê.
A minha invenção favorita de sempre é a Internet. Estou constantemente a questionar-me como seria o mundo agora sem Internet. Tive a sorte de testemunhar a procura pelo avanço da ciência e da tecnologia, especialmente na forma como a procurar da informação e da comunicação é agora transferida de uma forma muito rápida. A Internet é um exemplo de uma invenção sem um único inventor. O estudo foi realizado há muito tempo, e curiosamente, o sistema foi finalmente construído a partir dos dados compartilhados entre os investigadores, uma conduta que não é comum para cientistas convencionais e antiquados que tendem a manter os seus dados restritos para os outros. A Internet é uma invenção notável que nos mostra a importância da colaboração, bem como a ciência aberta para a ciência em particular e a civilização humana em geral.
Pergunta 4: Como explicaria brevemente os termos de Nanotecnologia e Nanociência para leigos?
A maneira mais simples de definir Nanotecnologia e Nanociência é dizendo que correspondem ao estudo de uma coisa minúscula. Quanto mais pequeno, melhor. Melhor em todos os termos, como mais rápido, mais eficiente, e coisas assim. “Nano” refere-se literalmente a um tamanho tão pequeno como 109 de algo e tipicamente invisível a olho nu, embora o impacto seja tremendo. Um dos impactos mais realistas e mais poderosos que podemos sentir sobre a substância nanoescala é a incidência da pandemia Covid-19, que estilhaçou todos os setores humanos da vida. A Nanotecnologia e a Nanociência centram-se no desenvolvimento de compostos ou materiais de nano escala para uma maior eficiência de funcionamento de um sistema. Mais importante ainda, eu certamente acrescentaria aos leigos que estes campos são divertidos e emocionantes, de modo que seja mais estimulante para eles.
Pergunta 5: Agora imagine a ciência e a tecnologia daqui a 10 anos. Na sua perspetiva, qual seria a grande invenção da próxima década?
Imagino que a automação e a inteligência artificial sejam predominantemente vistas como as grandes invenções nas próximas décadas. Dez anos será daqui a pouco, e eu preveria que a mudança será mais direcionada para o estilo de vida da sociedade, que plausivelmente depende mais da interação não-física, chips e tecnologia robótica.
Pergunta 6: A seu ver, quais os motivos para um/uma jovem se tornar num /numa cientista?
Citando novamente a minha cientista favorita, Barbara McClintock: «Se és curioso, podes ser cientista.» A curiosidade é um instinto humano, visível desde cedo. Assim, eu acho que ser um cientista está realmente no sangue de todos. As gerações mais novas carregarão e passarão o legado na construção da civilização para as próximas gerações, e isso deve começar agora. Além disso, até à data, gostaria de despoletar especialmente as raparigas, pois as mulheres ainda estão sub-representadas na investigação, especialmente nos países em desenvolvimento. Então, os jovens, especialmente as raparigas, tornar-se-iam mães. Como ao início uma mãe é a pessoa mais influente numa vida infantil, uma mãe com visão de responsabilidade a longo prazo pelo bem-estar humano, será o melhor modelo para criar os “futuros cientistas”. Assim, essas crianças tornar-se-iam pais que passariam responsabilidades semelhantes para a próxima geração, e isso seria levado adiante e criando um círculo positivo sem fim. Portanto, acredito que alimentar a paixão da jovem geração na investigação é um ato nobre e de gratidão infinita para o universo. Além disso, os jovens de hoje têm sido dotados com privilégios excecionais não pertencentes às gerações anteriores, como o avanço da tecnologia que aceleraria o seu desempenho científico para a contribuição para o bem-estar das sociedades. Então, se me perguntassem: “Porque é que os jovens se devem tornar cientistas?” Eu certamente responderia: “E porque não?”

Vengo de Indonesia y empecé a trabajar en el INL en mayo de 2019 como investigadora postdoctoral para trabajar en el desarrollo de un sensor integrado automático para alimentos y bebidas en el grupo de investigación de Calidad y Seguridad Alimentaria. Mi investigación está relacionada con la optimización del desempeño de los sensores de transistores de efecto campo de microfluidos a base de grafeno para la detección de ADN, principalmente para verificar la autenticidad del vino, como uno de los productos más importantes en Portugal. Mi color favorito es el rojo. El rojo es un color fuerte con una interpretación multi-perspectiva en la ciencia. En la óptica, el rojo es el color al final del espectro visible de la luz y el modelo de color RGB en la actual aplicación de pantalla electrónica. En biología, el rojo es el color de la sangre, la sustancia esencial en la vida. En la historia y la cultura, especialmente para Indonesia, el rojo es conocido como el símbolo de la valentía junto con el sacrificio. En la cultura china, refleja alegría y buena fortuna. Mientras los modernos asocian el rojo con la pasión, el calor y el amor. Como científica, veo el rojo como el color del coraje y la pasión en la investigación, donde la persistencia y el amor por la ciencia misma, sacarán a relucir la alegría y el bienestar de la sociedad.
2ª pregunta: ¿Cuál es su científico favorito de la historia?
Trabajo profundamente en el desarrollo de biosensores basados en ADN y durante mucho tiempo me ha crecido una gran curiosidad sobre el ADN, el bloque de construcción más importante de la vida y que lleva información genética transmitida de generación en generación. Mi científica favorita es Barbara McClintock, quien ganó un premio Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina en 1983. Desentrañó la capacidad del ADN en el maíz para moverse entre ubicaciones dentro del genoma e influir en la actividad de los otros genes. Esta parte del ADN se llama elemento transponible. Lo que realmente me cautiva es su tenacidad y resiliencia para sostener su hallazgo frente a la comunidad científica escéptica que, en ese momento, en 1950, creía que el ADN se fijaba permanentemente en orden y solo cambiaba a través de mutaciones discretas. Hasta que finalmente, otros investigadores encontraron los mismos fenómenos en las bacterias, y sus hallazgos finalmente fueron reconocidos, y eso contribuyó significativamente a las ciencias médicas. Una de sus hermosas citas que realmente me inspira como mujer científica de un país del tercer mundo es: «Si sabes que estás en el camino correcto, si tienes este conocimiento interno, entonces nadie puede apagarte, no importa lo que digan.»
3ª pregunta: ¿Cuál es su invento favorito de la historia y por qué?
Mi invento favorito de todos los tiempos es Internet. Siempre me pregunto cómo sería el mundo ahora sin Internet. Tuve la suerte de presenciar la búsqueda del avance de la ciencia y la tecnología, especialmente en la forma en que la búsqueda de información y comunicación ahora se desplaza a una manera muy rápida. Internet es un ejemplo de una invención sin un solo inventor. El estudio se había llevado a cabo durante mucho tiempo, y curiosamente, el sistema finalmente se construyó a partir de los datos compartidos entre los investigadores, una conducta que no es común para los científicos convencionales y anticuados que tienden a mantener sus datos sin abrir a los demás. Internet es una invención sobresaliente que nos muestra la importancia de la colaboración, así como la ciencia abierta para la ciencia en particular y la civilización humana en general.
4ª pregunta: ¿Cómo explicaría brevemente los términos de Nanotecnología y Nanociencia a personas laicas?
La manera más sencilla de definir la Nanotecnología y la Nanociencia es el estudio sobre una cosa pequeña. Cuanto más pequeño, mejor. Mejor en cualquier término, como más rápido, más eficiente y similares. “Nano” literalmente se refiere a un tamaño tan pequeño como 109 de una cosa y es generalmente invisible a simple vista, pero el impacto es tremendo. Uno de los impactos más realistas y más poderosos que podemos sentir sobre la sustancia a nanoescala es la incidencia de la pandemia de Covid-19 que destroza todos los sectores humanos en la vida. La Nanotecnología y la Nanociencia se centran en el desarrollo de compuestos o materiales a nanoescala para una mayor eficiencia de actuación de un sistema. Más importante aún, seguramente agregaría a los laicos que estos campos son divertidos y emocionantes, por lo que sería más estimulante para ellos.
5ª pregunta: Ahora imagine la ciencia y la tecnología dentro de 10 años. En su opinión, ¿cuál sería el gran invento de la próxima década?
Me imagino que la automatización y la inteligencia artificial se vean predominantemente como los grandes inventos en las próximas décadas. Diez años no están muy lejos de ahora, y yo predeciría que el cambio será más de estilo de vida de la sociedad, que plausiblemente se basa más en la interacción de contacto no físico, chips y tecnología robótica.
6ª pregunta: Para usted, ¿cuáles son las principales razones para que un joven se convierta en un científico?
Una vez más citando a mi investigadora favorita, Barbara McClintock: «si tienes curiosidad, puedes ser un científico». La curiosidad es un instinto de los seres humanos, crecido desde una edad temprana. Por lo tanto, creo que ser un científico está realmente en la sangre de todos. Las generaciones jóvenes llevarán y pasarán el legado en la construcción de la civilización para las próximas generaciones, y tiene que comenzar ahora. Además, desencadenaría particularmente a las mujeres, ya que hasta hoy, las mujeres todavía están subrepresentadas en la investigación, especialmente en los países en desarrollo. Los jóvenes, especialmente las mujeres, se convertirían en madres. Como una madre es la persona más influyente inicialmente en la vida de un niño, una madre con visión a largo plazo responsable del bienestar humano será el mejor modelo a seguir para criar a los “futuros científicos”. Estos niños se convertirían en padres que pasarán responsabilidades similares a la próxima generación, y se llevará a cabo y seguirá creando un círculo positivo interminable. Por lo tanto, creo que alimentar la pasión de las generaciones jóvenes en la investigación es un acto noble infinito de gratitud al universo. Además, los jóvenes hoy en día han sido dotados de privilegios excepcionales, como el avance de la tecnología que aceleraría su desempeño científico para la contribución al bienestar de la sociedad, y generaciones anteriores, no.
